The building that now hosts Le Calao restaurant was originally built in 1904 by a Chinese trader from Macau, for use as a private abode. A unique structure to Laos, it was created using Portuguese architectural details during the French Colonial Period. By the 1990s, the abandoned building had fallen into a derelict condition and was almost destroyed. In 1995 when Luang Prabang was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, the former house, now called Le Calao Restaurant, was registered as one of the city's World Heritage buildings. Le Calao offers a top quality Laotian, ethnic and international dishes, but with a signature focus on Laotian cuisine.
